Chinese New Year in Indonesia

Let me begin by saying that Bali cannot be described through words or pictures as they will never do my adventure or this beautiful country justice. But, I shall try! I have had the privilege of being able to travel to many glorious places in my life but I don’t think that I have been to a place quite like Bali (the happiness and balance that people feel there was an amazing thing to be apart of).

First Stop: Ubud, Bali
After a month of waiting, Emma (Russell, Grand Mannan), Patricia (Read, Halifax) and I were climbing into a cab and heading to the Hong Kong airport as fast as humanly possible on February 7th. The Bell rang at 3:00 and I’m sure that we were gone by 3:15. We met the boys for a late dinner and a beer at the airport then went on to our own gates.  We flew out at 9pm and landed in Singapore at 1am where we spent the night on the airport floor/chairs/lounge chairs (when people gave them up). When looking back at all of the times that I have slept on the airport floors over the years, Singapore was not my best nor was it my worst night on the floor (although it may have been the chilliest). After grabbing some breakfast (perhaps the best bagel I have ever eaten and a coffee) we headed for the gate and before we knew it we were landing in Bali (around 3pm).

Arrival in Bali went rather smoothly. It went something like this:
1.     Buy visas. Ouch.
2.     Wait in a sweaty line to get our passports stamped.
3.     Food&Water!
4.     Find a cabby that was willing to give us a fair price.

Ubud was our first stop on our two week adventure, which was only a bit of a jaunt from the airport in Denpasar. Now, for those of you who know the movie Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts, Ubud is the location in which they filmed the Love section of the film. Needless to say I was pretty excited. I am very happy to report that Ubud is just as beautiful, if not more so, than what I had been expecting. It was spectacular and exactly what you would think of when trying to picture Bali - I completely loved it!
We were pleasantly surprised to find that we were given the penthouse suite at Nani House, located on the main drag in Ubud (just up the street from the Monkey Forest)! It was a wonderful place to stay, I have zero complaints; it was a great location, the room was beautiful and comfortable, the people were great and the breakfast that was included was delicious.
Our first full day in Ubud was spectacular. We woke up early, joined up with Gina, Jasen, Krista and Josh and began our day biking adventure. We all piled into a van that took us about an hour north of Ubud to a stunning (and active) volcano where we had a delicious feast of banana pancakes and Balinese coffee. Not a bad start to the day.
We then drove about 20 minutes to a coffee and tea plantation where we were taken on a tour and shown how they go about making coffee (what a process for such a small amount). Once the tour was complete we sat at a large wooden table overlooking a valley and got to taste test all of the coffees and teas that were made there. We even tried a cup of the most expensive coffee in the world (earlier in the tour we were introduced to the animals that eat the beans and poop out the stuff that is then processed into coffee).

From there we biked to a Purification Temple, what an experience! There were many people coming and going and it was so peaceful. Each fountain represented something different and people would bring an offering then swim to the fountain that they were in need of. We went to a fountain that represented good karma (it’s meant to wash away the bad karma from your life) and after a prayer we put three handfuls of water on our heads. Now I wait to see if it all works out - So neat! Haha
After the purification temple we continue our biking adventure south through the small towns back towards Ubud. What a wonderful bike ride! Not only did we bike through quaint towns where each house had their own temple (the Balinese believe that the souls of the relatives rest in their family temples) but we biked through the famous rice fields. What a stunning sight! So stunning that while biking along a rough and tiny section of mud through one of the fields, Patricia drove her bike face first into the ditch.
Apparently she was too busy watching a couple of women who were working in the field and lost control. Of course, Patricia was just ahead of myself and as soon as I saw her going I was getting off my bike as quick as possible to help…probably should have stopped first because I then went flying sideways into the filthy water and was pinned by my bike. It might be a little strange but the first thought that went through my mind was “of course Kate, you just had to fall into a rice field” and the second was something along the lines of “oh my dear lord, get me out, there are leaches”. A completely irrational fear in general but in hindsight it was rather ridiculous! The tour guide laughed a little before getting the bike off of me and helping me out. Patricia and I were fine, pretty cut up but it could have been much worse! Naturally we all laughed about it, got back on our bikes and continued no worse for wear.
Our beautiful tour ended at a temple where we ate in little open huts over a pond full of fish. It was absolutely serene and lovely. We had been warned about eating the food in Bali but after living in China for almost a year clearly prepared us for anything Bali had to throw at us because we were fine (for the most part).

Day #2 was another one for the books! We spent the morning walking through the famous Monkey Forest, conveniently located just down from our hotel. I won’t lie, I was pretty nervous. While in Thailand I was warned to be aware, some might take a chunk of flesh off of me…not comforting. It cost us $2CAN to go through and it was quite a sight. A very natural and old temple, parts in ruins and covered in moss. It kind of reminded me of the monkey scene in The Jungle Book. Monkeys were Everywhere! It was bizarre to be so close to so many wild monkeys, they were so human-like.
After we had our fill of the monkeys we were a wash of sweat, the heat was incredible. So we picked up some water, snacks and headed to the pool next to our place. We lay by the pool for the better part of the afternoon and enjoyed lounging in such a lovely pool overlooking rice fields (what a life). Unfortunately it was this afternoon that sealed the fate of shade for poor Emma and Patricia. They were forced to stay out of the sun for a few days due to the burns they received from Mr. Sun.
We spent the evening at the Laughing Budda, a delicious restaurant, and called it an early night knowing full well that we had an early morning trip to Kuta.

January was a bit of a blur...

To be completely honest the time left in January after Christmas vacation to the beginning of February is all a bit of a blur. Did it even happen? I’m not convinced. I got back from vacation and it was back to reality (which I really can’t complain about but we all do at times, don’t we?). Having had such a wonderful time in Thailand with John made it difficult to get back into the swing of things – schedules, kids and not being able to eat/drink/sleep whenever I wanted, yikes. Although we all experienced a bit of the back-to-school depressies we all made it through and it was nice for all of us to be back together again. It’s awfully strange not being with the friends that you spend everyday with for two full weeks. We spent this time working, having gatherings, and planning our next trip (surprise, surprise). Chinese New Year was coming fast and furious and we were All ready for it. I’m not quite sure how any of us are ever going to go from teaching here where we get 2 weeks for Christmas vacation and then another 2 weeks a month later for Chinese New Year…we’ve been spoiled!
The boys looking daper (Michael, Joel and Patrick)

Events:
Joyce and Kenneth’s wedding - The first and last billionaire wedding I will most likely ever be invited to.
-
Chinese New Year Party hosted by the school for all employees. Some people won TVs and iPads. I won pink bed sheets. Dream come true (this would be the time to be hit with a pang of jealousy. HA!).

Our First Class Trip in Grade 2!
We went to Window of the World and it was a wonderful time! The kids really enjoyed themselves and it was such a neat place - we got to visit miniature versions of many famous places around the world. We even took the kids to the Alps where they could go sliding!! It was freezing. It reminded me of how much I love the fact that I can wear flats all year round here in China :) haha!

Like I said, the time between the two vacations was a bit of a blur but we certainly enjoyed ourselves with group breakfasts, evening cocktails, and I was running a lot (I even ran my first 19km! It was at this time that I began gearing myself up to register for a ½ marathon).

I'm still alive!!

I’m Back!! Apologies for having gone months without a word, post or picture! I promise that I have tried numerous times to post updates but to no avail, it should come as no surprise that the internet/vpn here in China remains consistently inconsistent.

A great deal has happened in my life here in China since my Christmas vacation, as I’m sure a great deal has happened in everyone’s lives (regardless of how large or minute the changes). I will try my best to summarize the last few months in a way that doesn’t drag on and that only makes you a little envious. With love haha!

Ok, here goes nothing. 2013 thus far (ish)

Last Leg of our Journey: Shenzhen - Hong Kong {January 1st-4th)

January 1st: Arrival
Feeling ambitious we woke up relatively early and grabbed the metro to Luoho!! John wanted to buy some gifts and I had wanted for him to experience this crazy market! We spent the morning there looking around and when we hit our wall we grabbed a cab home. We then proceeded to pack-up John’s life and head to the ferry terminal to head to Hong Kong! It was perfect, we made the 3:00 ferry as planned. J We arrived onto the streets of Hong Kong by 6:30/7:00pm. We grabbed a cab to our hotel, which ended up being in a wonderful location and settled in. Our first night was spent simply walking the streets of Kowloon – what a beautiful place!! We found a hole-in-the-wall to eat, which turned out to be delicious, and bought our drinks at a 7-Eleven (the cheapest option).

January 2nd: Stanley Market/Lang Kwai Fun
Day 2 in Hong Kong: on our second day we took our time in the morning. We lazed around and got into looking at pictures from years and years ago which gave us a pretty good laugh! We slowly got dressed and found our way to Stanley Market. We hopped on a bus and we are very happy that we made the trek. It took us a while to get to where we were going but the coast of HK is absolutely beautiful! The market was in a sort of beach town where, after shopping around, we found a great little place to have a beer and share a meal. This was one of our favorite meals! We had an assortment of cheese, meats and pâtés with bread as an entre and then a delicious goat cheese and spinach pancake. We sat and chatted for over an hour before we made our way back to the buss. We did some shopping on the way back to our hotel, including a trip into Tiffany’s (drool) and a 5 floor Forever21! When we arrived back to our place we cleaned up and headed out to for an evening in Lang Kwai Fong (“Fun”). We had a Great night out!! That place is insane; it’s a hill filled with bars and restaurants and people! We ate a delicious Chinese meal (which later came back to bite me after a cough on the dance floor…no need to share more) and then decided on a place to have a drink.

Of course the place that we chose was on a super steep hill and I was the one facing backwards… We each got a Hoegaarden; it was in a glass bigger than my head (but of course when I had both hands on around it the glass looked like a perfectly normal size). We went back and forth from bars and the 7-Eleven until we selected one place in particular. No one was dancing but I didn’t see this as a problem…within a half hour John and I were dancing with lots and lots of strangers! Haha We had a great time out on the streets and in the bars of Lang Kwai Fun and cannot wait to return J

How could I forget!! John made a new friend when we were out that had EVERYTHING in his book bag! When I say everything, I mean everything - even the cover to a hose. He wanted to be prepared for any situation that he may find himself in...hilarious guy!!

January 3rd: The Peak/The Sky Bar
We took our time this morning to get ready and head out. We knew we had lots to do but also knew that it was going to be our last day together. With our map we found our way to the bus that would take us to The Peak tram where we stood in line for what seemed like a short forever. Once we got our tickets we were squished in a crowd that all felt that they had to be on the tram first – we spent the entire time making fun of everyone and their anxiety levels. Once we got to the top we decided that The Peak was well worth the journey! It got cloudy as the day went on but initially we got a pretty great view of Hong Kong. Both John and I agreed that if we were to do it again,    we would want to go up at night to see Hong Kong lit-up! We ate a delicious meal at the top before heading back down to the real world and back to our hotel to get ready for our drink on the roof of the highest bar in Hong Kong (maybe the world?). We had attempted a drink at this same bar on our first night but went to completely wrong building (turned out it was an office building) but had decided it would be a nice thing to do on our last night together. We got ourselves dressed up and walked to this building. After some confusion and a few wrong turns we made it (it’s attached to the Elements Mall and the bar is at the top of the Ritz Carlton). We walked in with confidence and no one asked us if we were supposed to be there (our dressed up was not other people’s dressed up). We took an elevator to the 103rd floor before transferring onto another elevator to the 113th floor that took us to one of the most posh bars both John and I had ever entered. It’s difficult to put into words exactly what it was like but it was very impressive! We chose to sit outside and we found our own private corner to look out onto the city – it was a stunning view!! John had two small bottles of white wine in his coat pocket but we quickly decided that sneaking wine from a bottle was not an ‘ok’ thing to do! Haha It took me some time before I could sit on the edge with John, the height and the feeling of walking on a boat surprisingly freaked me out (the building was moving like crazy). John seemed super confident that my sitting on the edge would not tip the building over and convinced me it would be fine – so I sat and looked at the lights with him for a while (hahaha how embarrassing).  From The Sky Bar we decided to walk back to the Night Market for a yummy meal and drinks before calling it a night; before we knew it, it was 12:00am and it was time to head home…

January 4th: Good Bye @ the Airport.
We may have slept 2 hours in total and I may have woken up with a really puffy face; we stayed up chatting a little later than expected, our wake-up call came at 5:30am and we were out of our room by 6:00am. We took the metro and were able to transfer onto a really night Airport Express train that got us to the airport with plenty of time to spare. We went to check-in but couldn’t (too early) so we took everything and went for breakfast. It was really nice to be able to relax and chat and not have to say good-bye right away. After eating John was able to check-in. We walked around to find a seat and before long it was time for him to go. We said our good byes and I waited for him to get through security before I left. I got myself a ticket for a limousine (large van) and went straight home to Shenzhen where I stayed in my room for 2 days…I needed a couple of days to be sad, catch-up on sleep and write all of these blogs that I have done about our holiday).
